Suspected Cultist Burnt to Death Following Murder of UNIUYO Student

A suspected armed cultist met a fiery end, while three others escaped after allegedly perpetrating the brutal murder of a final year computer science student at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO).

The tragic incident unfolded in the student-populated communities of Idak Okpo, Nnung Anyan, and neighboring areas within Ita, situated in the Itu local government area of Akwa Ibom State.

Soyinka introduced cultism into Nigeria

The victim, identified as Daniel Okon, hailed from Oron LGA. He resided at 13, Ikpa Lane. According to a neighbor, the assailants, believed to be cultists, launched a raid in the early hours of Sunday targeting phones, laptops, and cash.

Daniel, in the company of his girlfriend, faced the intruders when they demanded entry into his residence. Refusing to comply, he bore the brunt of their aggression as they opened fire, fatally striking him in the abdomen.

Despite sustaining gunshot wounds, Daniel attempted to flee but succumbed to his injuries in the backyard. The thieves, after looting the premises, also seized Daniel’s phone before departing.

The raid extended to the landlord’s quarters and other residences, leaving a trail of stolen electronic gadgets and cash. Concerns arose over the whereabouts of Daniel’s girlfriend, who was taken into custody by the police after they responded belatedly to distress calls.

Tragically, Daniel’s chances of survival were hindered by the delayed arrival of a tricyclist, who transported him first to the nearby UNIUYO Clinic, where medical personnel were unable to treat him. He later passed away due to severe blood loss at Anua General Hospital in the Nwaniba area of Uyo, the state capital.

In response to the incident, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Waheed Ayilara, pledged to intensify efforts to root out criminals across the state, vowing to disrupt their activities and restore peace. He issued a stern warning to wrongdoers, urging them to vacate the state or face decisive action.
