Delta Council Chairman Jaro Egbo Faces Renewed Scrutiny Amid Allegations of Corruption and Past Controversies
Recent allegations have emerged against Jaro Egbo, the Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area in Delta State, accusing him of receiving monthly kickbacks of N400,000 from a former revenue official and a separate payment of N1.2 million purportedly sent to his wife for a cow. While these specific claims remain unverified by mainstream media or official investigations, Egbo’s tenure has been marred by several documented controversies that raise concerns about his leadership style and governance.
Documented Controversies Involving Jaro Egbo
1. Alleged Assault on PDP Chairman
In October 2024, during a town hall meeting in Ughelli, Egbo was reported to have physically assaulted the local chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lucky Ofomukoro, following a heated argument. Witnesses stated that the altercation disrupted the meeting, which was attended by Urhobo chiefs, political leaders, and PDP members. Egbo denied the incident, attributing the scuffle to opposition elements.
2. Threats Against a Journalist
In August 2024, investigative journalist Prince Amour Udemude alleged that Egbo threatened his life after he sought the chairman’s reaction to reports of increased shop rents and certificate fees. Egbo reportedly warned Udemude against publishing the story, claiming he was a “dangerous man” and vowing to “wipe [him] from this earth.”
3. Controversial Hike in Fees
Shortly after assuming office, Egbo’s administration increased annual shop rents from N5,000 to N240,000 and the fee for obtaining a local government certificate of origin from N2,500 to N16,000. The sudden hikes led to widespread protests by residents and traders, who accused Egbo of imposing hardship. Following public outcry, the fees were partially reduced, but tensions remained high.
4. Allegations of Political Violence
In August 2024, during nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests, Egbo was accused of orchestrating an attack on a youth leader participating in the demonstrations. A video circulated showing the youth leader being beaten, with protesters alleging that Egbo led the thugs responsible. The Delta State Police confirmed the incident but denied Egbo’s involvement.
5. Suspension of Task Force Over Extortion Claims
In October 2024, Egbo suspended the local government’s task force responsible for managing vehicle parking and market sanitation following allegations that members were extorting money from the public under the guise of official duties. The suspension aimed to curb the reported abuses and restore public trust.
Egbo’s political journey has seen alliances and fallouts. Notably, he was once closely associated with Ovie Omo-Agege, serving as a key coordinator in his political campaigns. However, their relationship soured amid allegations of Egbo’s arrogance, greed, and fraudulent behavior, leading to his removal from significant campaign roles. Subsequently, Egbo aligned himself with other political figures, including Chief Ighoyota Amori.
While the recent allegations of monthly kickbacks and a N1.2 million payment remain unverified, Jaro Egbo’s tenure as Ughelli North Council Chairman has been punctuated by multiple controversies, including physical altercations, threats against journalists, unpopular policy decisions, and allegations of political violence. These incidents collectively paint a picture of a contentious leadership style that has frequently clashed with public expectations and democratic norms.
