IYE Calls for Appointment of Itsekiri as MD of South South Development Commission
WARRI, DELTA STATE – The President of the Itsekiri Youths Elites (IYE), Comrade Lily-white O. Esigbone and it’s Secretary Comr. Eboma Tuoyo Michael have called on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to appoint an Itsekiri indigene as the Managing Director of the newly established South South Development Commission.
In a passionate appeal made earlier this week, the President Comr. Lilywhite decried the ongoing marginalization and oppression of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality in Federal appointments and institutions. He highlighted the critical and invaluable role the Itsekiri ethnic nationality plays in Nigeria’s economy, particularly through their contributions to the wealth of Delta State, the South South Geo-political zone and Nigeria at large.
“The Itsekiri contribute over 33% of the total wealth within Delta State and are vital to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Despite this massive contribution to the Nigerian socio economic life our people have continued to be sidelined and shortchanged from key federal government positions and lack any major federal presence or institutions in our homeland,” Comrade Lily-white stated.
The Secretary of the group Comr. Tuoyo Eboma stressed that the newly created South South Development Commission presents a golden opportunity to begin addressing years of exclusion and deprivation by ensuring equitable representation in leadership roles to Itsekiri.
“We urge President Tinubu to take a bold and just step by appointing an Itsekiri son or daughter as the Managing Director of the South South Development Commission. It is time to recognize our contributions and integrate our people into the federal structure of this nation,”
