The 528th edition of the Awankere Festival, a cherished annual celebration of fertility by the Okere people, took place on Saturday, July 12, 2025. The grand finale was honored by the presence of the Ologbotsere of Warri, Chairman of the Warri Council of Chiefs, alongside other prominent chiefs. Chief Gabriel Awala, the Uwangue of Warri; the Olare-Aja of Okere; Chief E. F Esisi; Chief Omolubi Newuwumi, the Oma Tamudenyin; and Chief Esther Okotie-Eboh, the Ejumotan of Warri, were among the esteemed guests.

The Ologbotsere’s attendance was particularly significant, as he had also graced the festival the previous year. Chief E. F Esisi, the Ogieboro of Okere, expressed delight at the Ologbotsere’s presence, accompanied by other prominent chiefs of the Warri kingdom. The Olare-Aja warmly welcomed and thanked the Ologbotsere for his attendance, while Chief Kofi Kartey, the Abolujiyan of Warri and Acting Olare-Aja of Okere, was also present to extend a warm welcome.

The festival showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Okere people, featuring traditional songs, dance, masquerade displays, folk drama, and other entertaining attractions. The crowd chanted the Ologbotsere’s appellations, “Ajabor” and “Atabrata,” in a song-like manner, as he entered the arena with the chiefs. The event drew a massive crowd, comprising Okere indigenes, Itsekiri people, and non-indigenes.

The 528th Awankere Festival was a vibrant celebration of community and culture. The presence of the Ologbotsere and other chiefs added to the significance of the event, which serves as a platform for the Okere people to connect with their heritage and traditions.
