Bayelsa: Tension in Yenagoa as Women Block Major Road Over Encroachment by Youths of Neighbouring Community

Dozens of women from the Agudama-Epie community in Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa State on Thursday morning blocked the busy Mbiama-Yenagoa Road in protest over the alleged destruction of their farmlands and encroachment by youths from the neighbouring Afenka community.

The protesters, dressed in black and chanting solidarity songs, accused the Afenka youths of forcefully invading their farmlands, destroying crops and threatening their source of livelihood.

Vehicular movement was disrupted for several hours as the women barricaded the road with sticks, leaves, and placards bearing inscriptions such as “Leave Our Land Alone,” “We Depend on Our Farms to Survive,” and “Afenka Youths Must Stop the Invasion.”

The women are demanding urgent intervention from the state government, security agencies, and traditional rulers to prevent a breakdown of peace between both communities.

As of the time of filing this report, security personnel had arrived the scene to maintain calm, while community leaders have commenced efforts to broker peace.
