Amaechi Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition, Promises to Serve One Term
Former Minister of Transportation and ex-governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking during a televised interview on Channels TV, Amaechi pledged to serve only one term if elected president, in adherence to Nigeria’s unwritten power rotation agreement between the North and South.
For now, the way Nigeria is, you must stick to that unwritten agreement that says south eight years, north eight years,” he said.
Amaechi stressed the need for competence, character, and credibility over ethnicity, noting that the South has capable leaders who can deliver effective governance.
He also took a swipe at the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, claiming that Nigeria is worse off today than under the Buhari administration, especially in the areas of security, transportation, and electoral independence.
“Buhari will tell you he didn’t achieve everything, but his government was better than this one by all standards,” he added.
Amaechi also accused INEC of lacking independence under the current government and stated that the commission has made it more difficult for new parties to register.
He dismissed speculations that his recent opposition stance is a result of being sidelined in the Tinubu administration.
“I’m not in opposition because Tinubu didn’t give me an appointment. I’m not interested in any appointment. I just want Nigeria to work,” Amaechi clarified.
Amaechi’s announcement comes amid growing calls for a credible opposition to challenge the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 elections. His move to the ADC and open criticism of the government has stirred fresh political conversations across the country.
