Ijaw Women’s Group Opposes Sale of Shell’s Onshore Assets

Ijaw women from the Niger Delta region are vehemently opposing the current plan to sell the onshore assets of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Limited to Renaissance Africa Energy. The Coalition of Ijaw Women Voices (CIWV) conveyed their disapproval of the impending sale, emphasizing their awareness of an agreement between the involved parties, pending approval from the federal government.

During a press conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, prominent Ijaw woman leader and activist Ann-kio Briggs urged women from other ethnic groups in the region to join in opposing the proposed sale of Shell’s onshore oil and gas assets. Briggs stressed that the stakeholders of these assets are the people of the Niger Delta region, and the attempt to sell these critical assets in Ijaw territory is unacceptable and will face resistance.

CIWV called on women from all ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta to raise their voices in rejecting and resisting the collaboration between the federal government and international oil companies to sell off the region’s resources. The group demanded transparency, accountability, and consultation as integral parts of the negotiations and decisions regarding the sale of any oil and gas assets in Ijaw territory.
