Delta Residents Accuse Monarchs, Vigilantes of Aiding Kidnappers
Several communities, including Ibusa, Issele-Uku, and Abavo, have recently reported abductions. Activists claim corrupt vigilantes act as informants, while some monarchs conceal their dealings from the public.
Rights groups have urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to act, warning that politicizing the state’s security corps law could worsen the crisis. A former police commissioner and community leaders confirmed herders had infiltrated vigilante networks, making abductions easier.
However, some monarchs deny involvement, blaming community criminals and rogue officers.
In contrast, 95-year-old Pa Uhurhemue Erhiahwe of Egbo-Kokori rejected a ₦10 million bribe and cow gifts from herders, citing loyalty to his people.
Residents demand swift action, including the suspension of culpable monarchs, stronger screening of security agents, and forest clearance operations to reclaim occupied areas.
