Warri Faces Looming Accommodation Crisis, Ariyo Warns

A Warri-based legal practitioner and social development consultant, Chief Robinson Ariyo, has called for urgent government intervention to address what he described as a looming accommodation crisis in Warri and its environs.

Ariyo expressed concern over the rising cost of housing in the area, noting that rental rates have become increasingly unaffordable for many residents despite prevailing income levels. He said the situation requires immediate policy attention and the introduction of a new regulatory framework to prevent further hardship.

According to him, many policymakers appear to have overlooked the growing housing challenges confronting ordinary citizens. He pointed out that while many workers earn less than ₦100,000 monthly, the annual rent for modest accommodation in Warri now ranges between ₦1 million and ₦2 million.

He described the development as a serious socio-economic challenge with potential security implications. Ariyo warned that the widening gap between income levels and housing costs could place immense financial pressure on workers, including public servants, and undermine efforts to promote transparency and accountability in public service.

The legal practitioner also predicted a rise in tenancy-related disputes and rent tribunal cases as more residents struggle to meet rental obligations. According to him, such developments could contribute to increased social tension within communities.

To address the challenge, Ariyo urged government at all levels to prioritize the construction of affordable and low-cost housing for residents. He also advocated the introduction of rent benchmarks and regulatory measures aimed at ensuring fair and affordable housing costs.

He emphasized that timely intervention is necessary to prevent the situation from escalating into a broader social and economic crisis, stressing that access to affordable accommodation remains a critical component of sustainable development and social stability.
