Itsekiri Young Elites (IYE) Commend Governor Oborevwori over Warri Stadium, Demand Completion of Koko Stadium
The Itsekiri Young Elites (IYE) have lauded the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, for the ongoing transformation and rehabilitation of the Warri City Stadium in Warri South Local Government Area, describing the project as a clear demonstration of purposeful leadership and commitment to infrastructural development.
In a statement released by the group president Comr. Lily-white O. Esigbone and Secretary Comr. EbomaTuoyo, the youth body expressed deep appreciation for the quality and pace of work at the stadium, noting that the development has rekindled hope among residents and sports enthusiasts across Warri and its environs.
According to the group, the project reflects the Governor’s broader vision of promoting sports development and youth engagement as tools for social and economic growth.
While commending the Governor’s efforts, the Itsekiri Young Elites (IYE), however, raised concerns over the prolonged abandonment of the Koko Stadium project located in Warri North Local Government Area. The project, which was initiated during the administration of former Governor James Ibori, has remained uncompleted for years, despite its strategic importance to the people of the area.
The group emphasized that Koko, being the administrative headquarters of Warri North, deserves a befitting sporting facility that can serve as a center for youth development, community engagement, and talent discovery. They noted that the continued neglect of the project stands in contrast to similar developments in other local government areas, where stadium projects have been completed and are actively serving their communities.
Speaking further, the group highlighted the critical role sports infrastructure plays in curbing youth restiveness, fostering unity, and creating opportunities for young people to thrive. They stressed that completing the Koko Stadium would not only bridge the developmental gap in Warri North but also reinforce the principles of fairness and inclusivity in governance.
“We acknowledge and appreciate the ongoing work at Warri City Stadium, which clearly shows that the Governor has the interest of the people at heart. However, we humbly appeal for similar attention to be given to the Koko Stadium project, which has been abandoned for far too long,” the statement read.
The Itsekiri Young Elites further urged the state government to prioritize the project as part of its broader development agenda, noting that such an intervention would restore hope among the people of Warri North and demonstrate a balanced approach to infrastructural distribution across the state.
They concluded by expressing confidence in Governor Oborevwori’s leadership, stating that his administration has the capacity to address the imbalance and deliver on the expectations of all Deltans.
The call adds to growing appeals from stakeholders across Warri North for the revival and completion of the Koko Stadium, a project widely seen as vital to unlocking the sporting and economic potential of the area.
