Northern Political leaders push for Jonathan’s return to challenge Tinubu in 2027
Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, is reportedly planning to return to politics by contesting the 2027 presidential election. Reports say he has accepted pressure from top northern leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to run again.
Sources told Vanguard and Daily Post that Jonathan recently met with northern leaders, including retired General Ibrahim Babangida, and that discussions have gone far. He is being considered a “one term candidate” who can unite different parts of the country and help power shift back to the North by 2031.
The source said the move to bring Jonathan back is being led by top Nigerian leaders and elders who believe he helped stabilize the country and economy during his six years in office. These elders started pleading with him to run against President Tinubu in 2027 to help rescue Nigeria and restore the economy.
Some believe allowing him serve one more term is the easiest way for power to return to the North in 2031 without strong resistance from the South. Since Jonathan already served one term, he is only allowed to serve one more if he wins in 2027
An ally in the PDP also told Vanguard that Jonathan has accepted to run, and he’s going into the race to find ways to reduce poverty, suffering, and economic hardship that many Nigerians are facing today.
PDP leaders are reportedly offering Jonathan an automatic presidential ticket if he declares interest and returns to active politics. Many believe that since his first term came from finishing Yar’Adua’s tenure, the constitution allows him to run again for just one more term.
However, the situation is not yet clear. A PDP spokesperson said the party hasn’t given any ticket or invitation to Jonathan, and that he must declare interest first.
Also, Jonathan’s media team denied social media posts that claimed he had declared his 2027 ambition, saying he does not even have an Instagram account.
As 2027 approaches, many Nigerians are watching closely to see if Jonathan will give in to the growing calls or continue playing the role of a statesman behind the scenes.
