The protesters chanted “Shell Must Pay” while holding placards with inscriptions such as “Shell, Clean Up Your Mess,” “Reparation for Ogale Now,” and “Environmental Justice for Ogoni Farmers.”

Shell Nigeria reported on February 5 that an oil spill occurred in Ogale, near Port Harcourt, due to an overflow from a saver pit during flushing operations.

The company stated that its spill response team had contained the overflow and notified authorities, adding that arrangements were being made for a regulator-led joint visit to assess the cause and impact of the spill.
